We've heard many marching band members say it's their favorite event of the entire marching season: The Elementary School Tour. Each year in late October, the Marching Maples take their show to Alexander, Lincoln, Michener, Prairie and Springbrook schools. They entertain the students and teachers, filling their small gyms with a big marching band sound, and filling more than a few young minds with dreams of one day being a part of that band. Mr. Kesterke emcees each show, talking with the audience about the instruments and how they all work together. He even gives one student at each school the chance to play a marching tuba. It's an opportunity to inspire our next generation of musicians. And judging by the audience's reaction each year, it's working. Click the image above to take a tour of MaggardRazors.com.
You can buy your pies from any Adrian band, choir or orchestra member from late October through early November for just $10 each. You can also reserve your pies online.
During Apple Pie Day, Adrian music families and other volunteers come together in the high school cafeteria to peel and cut apples, mix ingredients, fill pie shells, and package the pre-sold pies for customers. Yes, we work hard, but it's also a fun, social gathering filled with music and a free pizza lunch. For Pie Day 2016, more than 130 volunteers pitched in to make a school record 919 apple pies! For their help, students - and those who work in their name - receive a portion of the profits in their personal Music Booster account. That money can be applied to band camp and other music camps, private music lessons, instruments, repair, and other music expenses. Pie pick-up follows the morning's pie making process. Customers come to the high school cafeteria between 2 and 4pm to pick up their pies. Take a look at these videos of Apple Pie Day 2015 and Apple Pie Day 2016. Reserve your apple pies here. The Adrian Marching Band made school history October 21st at the 2017 Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association District 8 Marching Band Festival. The Marching Maples earned the highest rating of 1, marking the first time an Adrian band has received the top score at a marching band festival. (Watch the highlights in the video above.) “Terrific band sound, balance, articulation, attacks, etc. Bravo!” wrote one judge. “Excellent drumline! Superb band. Awesome show. Congratulations!” “Great energy,” noted the second judge. And the third judge agreed. “Great creativity and variety! Strong performance. Strong design. [It's] apparent that highly effective teaching is happening. Thank you!” (Support Maple Music! Click here to reserve your Music Booster apple pies.) Director of Bands Dan Kesterke envisioned this higher level of performance several years ago, making the decision to enter the band into marching competitions in 2012. The drum corps style of marching the band now emulates requires more effort, focus and discipline, says Kesterke, but it's an investment that's paying off, not only in higher festival scores, but in the group's camaraderie and individual growth. Mr. Kesterke also noted that contributions from the Elizabeth Wilson Foundation have been important to the success of the band. Their recent donations made it possible to purchase four marching tubas, three euphoniums, and several drum harnesses. The higher quality horns have helped our young musicians produce a better sound. The Maple Marching Band is the largest in Lenawee County. In the average high school, only 10% of students participate in all available music groups. An impressive 13% of Adrian High School students play in band alone, according to Kesterke. Factor in our many choirs and orchestras, and it's clear that Adrian students are more musically active. It was an exciting night in Jackson and, hopefully, only the first of many more achievements to come. From all of us at the Adrian Music Boosters, congratulations Mr. Kesterke, Mrs. Powers, and the entire Adrian High School Marching Band! What would Homecoming Week be without a good old-fashioned pep rally? This one featured the AHS varsity football team and cheerleaders, plus several rounds of tug-of-war between the classes and, eventually, the teachers. All the music was provided by the Adrian Maples Marching Band under the direction of Dan Kesterke. Take a look at a few of the highlights. Add some pep to your daily shave.
